Emergencies : ( All Users )
The Biochemistry & Biophysics Computer Service (BBCS) can be contacted during off-hours for emergencies. An emergency is a sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence requiring immediate attention. A situation is deemed an emergency only when multiple users within the department are affected, such as the VPN (bch-svr.ucsf.edu) or the email (biochem.ucsf.edu) servers being offline or down. **Please verify your connection to the internet before reporting an emergency.**
In an emergency situation, contact the Information Systems Manager (ISM) by calling the help desk number, (415) 476-6052, and following the steps below. If the problem cannot be corrected via the Internet or over the phone, the ISM at his discretion will page BBCS personnel to come onsite and correct the problem in a timely manner.
To contact the BBCS for a real department-wide emergency, please use the following steps:
- Call: (415) 476-6052, mark as an "Emergency"
- Include your name, a detailed description of the problem , and a phone number where you can be reached.
Urgent Matters : ( Biochemistry Faculty & Staff Only )
The BBCS also can be contacted during off-hours for urgent situations. Examples of urgent situations are a computer crashing just before a grant deadline or a broken connection to Biochem VPN through a secured network. To contact the BBCS for matters that really cannot wait for normal service hours, please use the following steps:
- Compose an email, set its priority to "High" , and email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
- Include your name, a detailed description of the problem , and a phone number where you can be reached.
"High Priority Emails" sent before 8:00pm will receive a response that evening. "High Priority Emails" sent after 8:00pm will receive a response the following day. If immediate attention is needed and the ISM cannot correct the problem via Internet or over the phone, BBCS personnel will be paged to come onsite and correct the problem in a timely manner.

- Select "Options" at the top menubar
- Choose "Priority" and "High"
- Send your email
- Happymail/Biochem Webmail:
- Compose a new email
- Notice "Priority" is at the top-right, change "Undefined" to "High"
- Send your email
- Apple Mail:
- Compose a new email
- Select "Message" at the top menubar
- Choose "Mark" and "As High Priority"
- Send your email
- Eudora:
- Compose a new email
- Select "Message" at the top menubar
- Choose "Change" and "Priority" and "High"
- Send your email
- GMail
- There is no way to set a priority flag in Gmail webmail, use a different email account.
