Printing Over TCP/IP:

Back to Support | Windows

Connect to an IP Based Print Device

  1. Find the IP Address of the print device, i.e. 128.218.121.253
    • Ask someone in your area or lab.
    • Look for the IP Address on or near the printer.
  2. Install the correct printer descriptions and printer drivers.
    • Printer drivers and descriptions are data files that include printer-specific information for a particular printer model. Otherwise, you will experience printing problems.
    • Download Printer Descriptions directly from the print manufacture's website (i.e. Epson, HP, or Tektronix).
  3. Click the Start Menu, go up to settings, and select "Printers."

  1. Double-click on "Add Printer," which will open the "Add Printer Wizard" window. In the next window, select "Local printer," un-check the "Automatically detect..." box, and click Next.

  1. In the "Select the Printer Port" window, select "Create a new port:" and use "Standard TCP/IP Port" as the Type. Click, Next.

  1. In the "Add Port" window, type in the print device's IP address in the first field. You will not need to change in the information in the second field. Click, Next.

  1. Back in the "Select the Printer Port" window, select "Use the following port:" and go down the list until you find the port that you had just created, the name should start with "IP_128.218..." Highlight that port and click Next. Then specify the printer's manufactor and printer type. Click, Next. Give the Printer a logical name, so you know where and what it is, for example "Bch 9W HP8000-121.253"

  1. In the "Printer Sharing" window, select "Do not share the printer." Click, Next.
    • Important: DO NOT create a share of the printer, this will cause network printing and access problems.

  1. In the "Print Test Page" window, click Next. Then click, Finish.
