I am interested in understanding the basic mechanisms that underlie synapse disassembly both during plasticity and following insult to the brain. In particular, I am using in vivo imaging techniques to monitor synaptic morphology and function at sites of ongoing synapse disassembly. I am also using genetic approaches to identify mutations that can block inappropriate synapse disassembly and possibly lead to new treatments for diseases where synaptic function and stability are compromised.
