Tetrad Student/Faculty Journal Club Description and Requirements
Every Tetrad graduate student is required to give one formal presentation in a Tetrad Student/Faculty Journal Club. Student presentations are scheduled during their second year of graduate school.
At least three weeks prior to the scheduled presentation date, each student must choose two members of the Tetrad faculty to sponsor, coach and rehearse each p resentation. The primary faculty coach will have expertise germane to the presentation; the other should be without such expertise ("naïve coach" ).
The student must have the coaches’ approval of the paper before proceeding with preparing the talk. Students are encouraged to be adventurous in th eir choices of papers. Papers are expected to be unusually interesting and important. They should be of general interest to students and faculty in the Tetrad progr ams and should not be solely of interest to members of a single program. At the first meeting, the student will discuss the paper with faculty coaches to ensure that the choice of paper meets these criteria. If not, an alternative paper must be chosen. The student should then schedule with his or her coaches at least two rehear sals of the journal club presentation.
An evaluation of the presentation will be prepared by the primary faculty coach and will, along with the paragraph justifying the choice of paper, become part of the student’s academic record.
Tetrad Student/Faculty Journal Club presentations are considered an important part of the graduate curriculum. If a student’s presentation is judge d to be unsatisfactory, he or she will be required to make an additional Journal Club presentation.
Attendance at Tetrad Student/Faculty Journal Club is required for all first and second year students. Regular attendance is strongly recommended for more seni or students.
