High School Summer Internships One of SEP’s longest-running programs is the High School Summer Internship Program in which high school students gain authentic research experience and sustained support with the college application process. While the application process for this program is rigorous, grades and test scores are not used as gatekeepers. Instead, primary importance is placed on whether this program will make a significant difference in the lives of the high school students. The majority of high school interns do not have family members with college degrees; additionally, many of the interns are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Yet, nearly all UCSF high school interns go on to college. For the 2001 cohort, all have matriculated at a college:
In comparison, national data for students with similar backgrounds show that only 53% would be expected to attend college.
"We liked one of our students from the summer so much, we hired her as a lab assistant. –UCSF Mentor “Before this program I didn’t really think about college. But after working in a lab and meeting adults who went to college, it inspired me to want to get my Bachelor’s degree and work in a lab.” – SFUSD Student |

“By preparing for the presentation, I helped myself get a better understanding of what I am doing. It's easy to understand the individual steps such as mixing the solutions, culling the DNA, etc. The hard part is trying to understand how all those small procedures relate to each other and to my lab's big question.” - SFUSD Student |
“I knew that my chemistry teacher would ask a lot of questions which was actually what he did, but I could almost answer every single question he asked. I saw the proud look on his face and I was proud of myself too.” - SFUSD Student |
“I also saw that when you enjoy your work, everything seems to flow much more smoothly. You are not bored and miserable, and you can take hardship in stride. Indeed, the fact that everyone around me seemed to generally enjoy what they were doing made the entire laboratory free of weariness and a grumpy demeanor. I found that because I enjoyed my work, I myself had a much easier time completing my tasks than I could in a place I don't like as much (i.e., the driver's education class).” – SFUSD Student |
