Family Science Nights Family science nights are a great way for parents to learn more about scientist-teacher partnerships. Each Quattro team organizes a family science night at their school site, and students’ family members are invited to join the Quattro students, teachers, and UCSF volunteers for an evening of science activities. The teachers and UCSF volunteers kick-off the event, with SEP staff attending. Dinner is provided through the Quattro grant. Generally, the 1st-5th grade students prepare posters and lead hands-on demonstrations for their families of the science and health lessons they have done in the classroom, while the kindergarten students work with their families in activities led by the teachers and volunteers. These nights are an effective way to bring parents to the school to participate in a fun and educational way with the school community. Families who attend gain a better understanding of the importance of science in their child’s life and learn some ways that science is being used to develop their child’s language skills. Parents and teachers can then work together to build a strong foundation in both science and language. “I learned to be part of a great and enthusiastic team. Participating in the Quattro Alliance program gave me the chance of being part of a ‘scientist’ community.” –SFUSD Teacher Quattro Links: |
