Connect
to Remote Macintosh Shares via Network Browser
You can use the Network Browser if you are unsure about
the computer's IP Address or DNS Host name. Remember, a computer's Fileshare
name is not the same as a DNS Host name.
A networked computer has three different connection methods:
* an IP Address which is a set of numbers: 128.218.121.70
* a DNS Host name which is tied to the IP Address: biochemistry.ucsf.edu
* a Fileshare name, unrelated to the two above, is only used to "post"
the names of the Macintosh filesharing computers being browsed at the
time the network is being queried: Bch_9W_Web_Server.
- Find the Application, "Network Browser," there
should be an alias inside the Apple Menu Items, in a folder named "~Misc"
inside the Apple Menu, or perform a search a search on your drive.
- Open the Application, you will see the Network window
populate with computer share names of Macintosh computers running Apple
FileSharing Protocol.
- Click on the arrow next to the File Share name to expand
the remote computer's shared directories. Enter your username and password
to access the share.
- Based on permissions set to your username,
you will be able to access contents of that share.
