Connect to Remote Macintosh Shares via Network Browser

You can use the Network Browser if you are unsure about the computer's IP Address or DNS Host name. Remember, a computer's Fileshare name is not the same as a DNS Host name.

A networked computer has three different connection methods:
* an IP Address which is a set of numbers: 128.218.121.70
* a DNS Host name which is tied to the IP Address: biochemistry.ucsf.edu
* a Fileshare name, unrelated to the two above, is only used to "post" the names of the Macintosh filesharing computers being browsed at the time the network is being queried: Bch_9W_Web_Server.

  1. Find the Application, "Network Browser," there should be an alias inside the Apple Menu Items, in a folder named "~Misc" inside the Apple Menu, or perform a search a search on your drive.
  1. Open the Application, you will see the Network window populate with computer share names of Macintosh computers running Apple FileSharing Protocol.
  1. Click on the arrow next to the File Share name to expand the remote computer's shared directories. Enter your username and password to access the share.

  1. Based on permissions set to your username, you will be able to access contents of that share.
