How to specify certain folders and files so that they will NOT be backed up: Our backup system is set-up to ease your worry about you losing your important work/research related data files. However, you must take responsibility to correctly mark the unimportant data files/folders, like: "Internet downloads," "MP3s," "Video files," and other large size files. To simplify things, you can place all of the unimportant folders into one folder. For example, I could create one folder called, "Do Not Backup," and place all three folders ( "Internet downloads," "MP3s," "Video files) into it. Then specify, using the instructions below, to have the backup server to skip the "Do Not Backup Folder," which will also ignore the folders inside of it. The simple instructions below will guide you on configuring the Retrospect Client software on your computer. These steps must be done on all computers that are on the Biochemistry Backup System. With Mac OS X, open the Retrospect Client application, which is stored in the Applications folder.
Click on the "Preferences" button, then check the box next to "Private/Folders/Volumes." Click OK, and quit out of the Retrospect Application.
Next, Go through your hard drive and create a "bullet" (by using the option-8 key combination) either in the beginning or the end of the folder name. For example, I have placed a bullet in front of the "Downloads," "Large Files...," and "iTunes Music" (MP3s). This needs to be done for all of your folders that you want the backup server to skip. The server will now ignore these folders when the computer is backed-up.
That's it, you're done. Mac OS 9, the retrospect client is stored in the Control Panels folder.
Click on the "Preferences" button, then check the box next to "Private/Folders/Volumes." Click OK, and close the Retrospect Control Panel. (In this image the box is unchecked, but you need to have your's checked).
Next go through the drive and rename folders with a bullet, illustrated three images above. This needs to be done for all of your folders that you want the backup server to skip. With Windows, the Retrospect Client is stored in the Control Panel folder.
Select the "Access" tab. Check the box next to "Private/Folders/Volumes." Next, Click on the "Add..." button.
Browse through all of your hard disks and choose a folder that you do not need backed-up, then click, OK. For example, my "Paul's Disk1" folder contains many MP3s that should not be backed-up. This needs to be done for all of your folders that you want the backup server to skip.
Click OK, to close the Control Panel. That's it, you are done. |
