The
Event
On
April 1st, 2008, the old Biochemistry Web Server was retired and all the Biochemistry's hosted web sites are now housed on our new web server (this is not an April Fool's joke!).
New Offerings
Our new web hosting services will provide more offerings than ever before! Here are some highlights:
- Connect & upload your web content using any computer (not just a Mac).
- Better stability and performance while using WYSIWYG applications, like Dreamweaver.
- Support for creating "private" folders on your site, this would allow you to set your own login and password to certain folders for internal distrubution of files. More information to follow by, April 14, 2008 or sooner.
- Support for dynamic content, using PHP & MySQL, you can either build your own or use a Content Management System (CMS) that BCS will soon provide to you, expected release for CMS will be in Summer 2008.
The Impact
As of May 1st, 2008, you will no longer be able to host web sites that use FileMaker Pro or Tango Action Files (t2k) as the server's backend. Therefore, you will not be able to see, connect, or
access remote FileMakeer databases (on biochemistry.ucsf.edu). Additionally, you will no longer be to able to use Apple FileSharing to connect to the web server and upload files, see below for other connection metods.
Other Methods
Instead of using Apple FileSharing, use the SFTP Protocol to connect to the remote web server (biochemistry.ucsf.edu).
As a reminder, the web server can only be connected while on the UCSF Campus network or using the VPN Connection while are off campus.

- Disk Quota & MySQL database sizes are not to exceed 10GB in total
- CPU Usage should not exceed 10% of the total server's CPU Capacity
- Bandwidth should not draw high number of hits to the server or utilize a large amount of traffic throughput that degrades the server's performance
- Any pages on the web hosting system can be search indexed by the major search engines (e.g., google, yahoo, etc.), no effort will be added nor restricted for any pages. Most search engines honor the Robots Exclusion Standard through 'robots.txt' files, which you can implement on your own web directory. BCS does not provide any assistance nor guarantees for setting up this implementation/standard."
